If you’ve been around here long, you may have heard of my complete adoration for vinyl. I just love it. It can be easily personalized and makes any project look so much sweeter!
If you’re new to vinyl, there can be a bit of a learning curve. So many different varieties to pick from and specific instructions for each. If you’re new to vinyl, here’s a great step-by-step guide to using heat transfer vinyl. It includes everything you need to get started, including lots of tips I’ve learned along the way!
Once you’ve picked your vinyl and project type, it’s time for the fun part – creating your design! You can create your own design right in the Cricut software, but for the purpose of this post, I’m going to assume we’re using SVG files. Let’s go through a quick step-by-step guide to uploading SVG files to the Cricut Design Space software.

What is a SVG File?
A SVG file, also known as a Scalable Vector Graphic, is basically a two-dimensional graphic that is based on XML markup language. This markup language means that even though it appears as a picture, the file is saved as a text-based file. A SVG file is a format created by the World Wide Web Consortium as a standard way of displaying graphic on the internet.
All of that to say, a SVG file is my go-to choice for creating projects with Cricut Design Space.

How to Upload a SVG File to Cricut Design Space
So now that we know what a SVG file is, let’s learn how to use them with the Cricut.
To upload a new SVG file to Cricut, open a new project and click upload (bottom left side panel).
Clicking upload will open a screen that looks that this… Click Upload Image to continue.
That will open another upload screen. Either drag and drop your file or click browse to find your desired file on your computer. Select your file and click open.
Once you select a file, it will bring up a preview screen. Designate the file name and any tags you would like associated with it. Tags will make your files easily searchable, so add any keywords that you might associate with the file you are uploading. Once you’ve entered any desired information, click save.
That’s it! You’ve successfully uploaded a file to Cricut Design Space! Now, let’s quickly learn how to add our image to a new project. Select your image and click add image.
Once the image is added to your project, it will be added as a grouped design. This simply means that all the colors of your design will be grouped into one layer. A grouped design allows you to resize each piece of the design collectively and proportionately.
If you want the ability to control more specific elements of your design, (For example, adjusting the size of just one piece of your image) we simply need to ungroup the layers.
That’s it! Once you image is uploaded and added to your project, just adjust it to your liking and cut it on the medium of your choice. 🙂
