Start Your Own Money-Making Blog in Just 7 Easy Steps
Are you interested in starting your own blog? You’ve come to the right place!
Navigating the blogging world can be a bit intimidating at first. Similar to my Step-by-Step Quilt Along, I’ve compiled all the bits and pieces of information I’ve gathered into one easy to follow guide. This guide is perfect for anyone interested in starting their own money-making blog!
Why Start a Blog?
There are so many reasons for start your own blog! Realistically, it is an inexpensive way to set up and run your own business. Plus, blogging offers huge money-making potential.
For me, the initial drive to set up my own blog was fueled by a need for an outlet for my creativity. Becoming a stay-at-home mom was one of the best decisions we have made as a family, I love each and every moment I get to spend with my little one. But, I longed for an outlet for my creativity. Blogging provides that outlet, allows me to help others, is a way I can use my college degrees and, the best part, helps out financially.
Just imagine what would earning an extra $500 – $1,000 per month do for your family?
You owe it to yourself to give blogging a chance!
What Would I Blog About?
What are you really passionate about? That thing you cannot stop talking about? What are you always reading more about?
Is this passion of yours something that people would pay to learn more about?
For example, I love meal planning and using coupons to save on groceries. Each week it’s a game to see how much I can save off the total bill. Oh the adrenaline rush, 🙂
People (myself included) have absolutely paid to learn more about couponing, meal planning & saving money.
Take your passion + ensure people would pay for it in some way = you have your blogging topic!
1. Choose a Blogging Platform
A blogging platform is a location to house your blog. It is where you design, create pages, write posts etc.
There are a handful of free platforms out there, including Blogger and WordPress.org (not to be confused with wordpress.com). Free platforms are okay for hobby bloggers with no interest in making money. But to truly reap the financial benefits of your hard work, you’ll want to set up a self-hosted blog.
To put it simply, you want to set up a blog that you own and have complete control over the content. Most free platforms do not offer this important piece of the puzzle. So which platform should you use?
WordPress.com vs WordPress.org?
Steer clear of WordPress.org. Instead set up your blog with WordPress.com. WordPress.com gives you complete control over your content. In addition, owning your site and content allows you the option to monetize how and when you choose.
WordPress.org is the free version of WordPress. While initially the free aspect may seem appealing, the limitations are crippling for many bloggers.
When you set up a blog with wordpress.org, you don’t own the content. WordPress.org can shut your blog down with little notice for even minor mistakes.
To justify the free version, wordpress.org can place ads anywhere on your site that might not be on brand for your audience. When you set up a blog with WordPress.com and Siteground, you have the ability to control ads on your site, if you choose to include them.
In summary, set up your new awesome blog with WordPress.com, not WordPress.org.

2. Picking Your Domain Name & Hosting
A host provides server space for your blog.
WordPress is your apartment, Siteground is your landlord leasing the apartment to you. Your domain name is your address, or the information needed to get exactly to your (website) or apartment.
Last year, my husband tested out blogging for awhile. Ultimately, he decided it wasn’t for him, but we learned a lot from that experience. He hosted his blog with another hosting company. His biggest frustration was the amount of downtime his blog experienced. It was down at least 1-2 hours every week. So frustrating.
So, when I set up this little blog, I did some more research and found Siteground. I couldn’t be happier.
I could go on and on about my love for Siteground.
Here are some of my favorite features:
1. The uptime with Siteground is incredible. Gone are the days of constant emails warning of a non-responding site that my husband used to get. Since I started my blog, it has not been down at all. Not once. Not even for one minute. That is incredible. And so very much appreciated. Bloggers work really hard on their content, make sure your host allows people to view it!
2. The customer service is incredible. Literally fantastic. I am not super tech savvy, though I try to figure a lot out on my own. Inevitably, when playing around with settings that I shouldn’t be, I mess up my site. This has happened a few times and each time the wonderful customer service team at Siteground is available 24/7 to help get my site back up and running properly. Plus, they have chat customer service, which is absolutely fantastic with a little one running around!
3. Siteground’s speed and technology is fantastic. They offer SuperCacher free, while most of the other companies upcharge for this feature. The SuperCacher helps your site load really fast, which helps your rank with Google search results, and it increases the number of page hits your site can handle!
- They issue and install a free SSL Certificate with the majority of domain names pointed at their servers. A SSL Certificate provides a secure connection, which keeps thing like passwords & credit card information secure. As a blogger, this is huge, particularly if you have dreams of selling items through your site!
- Siteground is constantly updating their technology. I never worry about issues with outdated technology, as they are always on the cutting edge.
3. Sign up and Select a Plan
The first thing you want to do is select a plan that will fit your needs as a blogger.
For a new blogger the StartUp plan might be a perfect fit. This allows you all the essential features mentioned above on one website, with up to 10,000 visitors per month.
I use the GrowBig plan, as it offers even faster website loading and supercharged awesome customer service across multiple websites. This is particularly beneficial if you want to explore different blog niches. You can set up multiple websites and have them all hosted in one location. So convenient!
Select your plan and click through to register your domain name. As a reminder, your domain name is like you address. It is the website address people type in to find your blog. When you type in potential domain names and click proceed, Siteground will let you know if the domain name is available.
If you click through my link to start your blog, not only will you get 70% off, you will also get free domain registration for a year!
Once you determine your domain name, click through and input all of your information.
It will give you the option for 2 add-ons: Domain Privacy and SG Site Scanner.
Domain Privacy keeps your personal information private. When you purchase a domain name, your information is publicly available. This add-on prevents that and ensures your information stays private.
SG Site Scanner operates by scanning your website everyday searching for malicious code. It notifies you immediately of any issues found, so you can take immediate action to remedy.
I use and love both of these features and I would recommend them both!
For less than $100 you have your own online business! How awesome is that!?
4. Install WordPress
Once you’ve completed your set-up with Siteground, your next step is to install WordPress.
We’ve already picked our domain name, or our address, and we’ve signed up with Siteground, our landlord. Now we just need to secure and move into our apartment by installing WordPress.
There are two ways to do this:
1. Contact Siteground customer service. Ask them to set up your site for you and send you your WordPress login details. Here’s an easy link for Siteground’s Chat Customer Service.
Once WordPress is set up, go to www.YOURNEWBLOGNAME.com/wp-admin and enter your login details to enter your WordPress site.
2. If you prefer, you can also manually install WordPress relatively painlessly. To get started, you’ll want to ensure you’re logged into Siteground and navigate to My Accounts tab.
Under the MyAccounts tab, click the red cPanel button.
Under WordPress Tools (4th section down in the middle), click the blue WordPress installer button.
Click the blue Install button.
Enter your credentials:
Choose Protocol: Signing up with the free SSL Certificate offered through Siteground, it is likely https://
Choose Domain: Choose your domain from the dropdown box.
In Directory: You can leave this blank.
Site Name: Enter a general name for you site. This can be changed at a later date.

Select Plugins: Choose plugins you want to install. I recommend waiting to install these once you have selected your theme.
Choose Theme: You can install a theme here, or you can install one once you login to your WordPress site. You can start with either a free or paid theme. I jumped right in with a premium theme through AngieMakes and couldn’t be happier. She creates some of the most beautiful and responsive themes out there!
Once you’ve entered your information, click install.
You did it! You just set up your very own little business! 🙂
5. Login to Your WordPress Site
You have successfully signed up for hosting, selected a domain name and installed WordPress. Way to go!
Now all that’s left is to navigate to your new blog and login.
Your new blog page will be www.YOURNEWBLOGNAME.com/wp-admin
Bookmark that address, you will be using it a lot!
6. Personalize Your Site
Now all that’s left is to personalize your site! This is done in party by installing a theme. A theme will dictate what your site looks like to visitors. You can get started initially with a free theme.
Personally, I jumped right in with a premium theme as I didn’t want to worry about trying to switch themes once my blog was up and running.
I use the Lucy & Lane theme available through AngieMakes. I absolutely love it. There are so many options and possibilities for formatting. I love how feminine the theme looks, plus the tech support was incredible!
AngieMakes has an entire database full of tech support guides for setting up different features on your website. I can’t even begin to tell you the number of times I have used this database as a reference! I love my theme and can’t recommend it highly enough! Check out this and other themes offered through AngieMakes here.
